About Dr. Takagi

Born in Fukushima, Takagi Tomoe graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the Imperial University of Tokyo in 1885. Takagi was appointed director of the Fukui Prefectural Hospital in the summer of 1885, and from 1888 became director of the Kagoshima Hospital, but resigned in 1892 to take up a position at the private Institute of Infectious Diseases established by Kitasato Shibasaburo (1853-1931). In 1896, as a technician in the Ministry of the Interior, he was also a member of the Central Health Council and the first director of the National Serum Pharmacy.

In 1902, Takagi was invited to Taiwan by Goto Shinpei, Taiwan's civil administrator, and served as medical director and hospital chief of the Taipei Hospital of the Taiwan Governor's Office, a technician in the Taiwan Governor's Office, a professor at the Taiwan Medical School, and the president of the medical school. He later served as a temporary epidemic prevention commissioner, chief of the Temporary Epidemic Prevention Section, chief of the Health Section of the Police Headquarters, and an executive of the Investigation Committee for Endemic and Infectious Diseases of Taiwan and an executive of the Central Sanitary Commission of Taiwan.
