The 17th Medical School Graduation Ceremony

During Takagi's tenure as medical school headmaster, he trained a number of Taiwanese doctors, notably Lai He and Du Congming. Lai He (1894-1943) , one of Taiwan's leading literary scholars, was one of Takagi Tomoe's disciples at the Medical School. After graduating in 1914, he set up a clinic in his hometown of Changhua, often caring for and helping poor patients, while at the same time devoting himself to literary creation. Du Congming (1893-1986), known as the father of Taiwan's medical science, was a native of Tamshui, Taipei. He received excellent grades as a student, taking the first place in the Taiwan Governor's Office Medical School and graduating with the first place, and then went to Japan for a doctoral degree of medicine at Kyoto Imperial University, becoming the first doctor of medicine in the history of Taiwan. He was also the first foreigner to receive a doctorate in Japan. Lai and Du had been good friends since medical school. While attending medical school, Lai and Du once had walked back to Changhua from Taipei, visiting medical school graduates who had started their own businesses in other parts of the country along the way.
